Goonhilly Earth Station — 300kVA Modular UPS Replacement

Like-for-like swap of an end-of-life Eaton 300kVA UPS with a Riello Multi Power 2 modular system, reusing existing cabling and battery racking at one of the world's most iconic satellite ground stations.

The Challenge

Goonhilly Earth Station operates mission-critical satellite and deep-space communications infrastructure that cannot tolerate unplanned downtime. Their existing Eaton UPS 9395P-300 had reached end of life, and a direct like-for-like replacement was needed without disturbing the existing battery racking, cable infrastructure or 630A 400V supply arrangement.

Our Solution

We specified a Riello Multi Power 2 (MP2) 300kW modular UPS with four 67kW SiC power modules — providing 268kW of protected capacity with a spare module slot for future N+1 redundancy. The existing 80 × Yuasa SWL3300 12V 110.2Ah batteries (10-year design life, flame retardant) were reinstalled on the existing racking, and the existing 630A 400V cabling was reused, minimising disruption and cost. A NetMan 208 network card provides full SNMP monitoring integration.

The Outcome

The MP2 delivered a direct swap with runtime performance exceeding the previous system — 7.6 minutes at full 268kW load, extending to 88 minutes at 20% load — with the efficiency and serviceability benefits of hot-swap modular architecture. The existing site infrastructure was fully reused.
